Spirits still high as Waratahs get desperate with season ‘on the line’

The NSW Waratahs are clinging to the positives as they seek a much-needed clinical edge to keep their Super Rugby Pacific Finals hopes alive.

Even the Taha family admit it is strange that they are still in the hunt for a top eight spot despite being at the bottom of the ladder with only three rounds remaining.

But that's how it is, as they say, and spirits remain high for the must-win derby against ninth-placed Western Force in Perth on Saturday night.

“I mean, look at us, it doesn't matter who we play. We've got to stick our fingers out and we've got to be ready for it,” center Joey Walton said Tuesday.

“It's been all on the line lately, but it's definitely coming to the pointy end now.

“I'm excited for some good conditions, and hopefully we'll be in good shape if our minds are right.”

This is not the first time the Waratahs have cut the deficit to one point in the second half against the Brumbies last Saturday, missing out on a much-needed win in a 29-21 defeat at a waterlogged Allianz Stadium.

Darren Coleman's side will head west knowing nothing but a more polished performance will be enough before more must-win battles with Moana Pacifica and the Queensland Reds.

“We keep getting down to one point and not finding the moment or something or just executing to win the game,” Walton said.

“So this was very frustrating for us.

“We're creating a lot of chances. If we can execute a little bit more, we can score those points and win.”

With Harry Johnson-Holmes joining a depleted Waratah side due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, on-loan Argentine Enrique Pierito is sure to start against the equally desperate force.

“The big thing for morale is that we get someone new every day,” Walton said.

“So, you're kind of meeting someone new, trying to introduce them to their playbook, and you don't really have any time to sit there and complain about it.”
