La Liga round-up: Girona lose ground in battle with Barcelona, Mallorca edge closer to safety

We are now at the end of the season, with the MD36 round kicking off on Thursday with three matches taking place across Spain. Real Madrid hosted Alaves at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, while the other two matches saw Girona face Villarreal, and Mallorca travel to face Osasuna.

Girona 0-1 Villarreal

Girona's hopes of finishing second are now hanging by a thread, after another disappointing result. They lost 1-0 at home to a ten-man Villarreal, with Bertrand Traoré's first goal for the Yellow Submarine being the decisive moment – as Kiko Femenia was sent off late on. The result keeps Marcelino Garcia Toral's side hoping to secure a European place for next season.

Osasuna 1-1 Mallorca

The early game ended in a draw against El Sadar, which saw Mallorca take another step towards securing their place in La Liga for the 2024-25 season. They fell behind at half-time thanks to John Moncayola's goal for Osasuna, but Sergi Darder secured a share of the spoils in Pamplona.
