Xavi Hernandez told Barcelona President Joan Laporta he could win Champions League with current squad

When Barcelona president Joan Laporta broke down in tears as he explained the decision to continue with Xavi as coach at the beginning of May, it looked as if this might be the case. However, a few weeks later, all reports from the Catalan capital indicated that Xavi Hernandez would leave the club.

One of the alleged reasons was Laporta's anger at Xavi's statements in a press conference. For many, Xavi was simply stating the truth when he said it would be difficult for his team to compete against the likes of Real Madrid and the European giants in the Champions League given the financial constraints they face.

Hence, it seemed out of place when Laporta considered dismissing Xavi as a result of those statements and the devastating defeat against Girona. One reason, according to Bar Kanalets, is that Xavi told Laporta during the confrontation talks that he felt he could win the Champions League with the current team, and make one or two adjustments.

This is clearly a complete departure from what he expressed in the press conference, but perhaps also indicates that Laporta and the board are not completely convinced that Xavi will remain at the club. It is worth noting that Xavi was on the verge of dismissal before he announced his decision to resign, and although the results improved, he did not find a clear direction either.
