Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona's coach, had already announced his departure from the club in the summer, and it seemed as if the club was happy to complete this departure, until Xavi met with President Joan Laporta.
It was reported that Xavi made it clear that he felt he had the energy and strength to continue in this role, while sporting director Deco and Laporta promised to do everything in their power to improve the team in the summer transfer market.
These meetings came after Laporta told the board that Xavi would leave earlier on Wednesday afternoon. Now, Jordi Basti reports on RAC1, as reported by Diario AS, that Xavi has told Laporta that he and his staff expect to pay out the final year of their contracts if he is sacked. Xavi signed a one-year contract extension last year until 2025, and the total salary for the technical staff is reported to exceed €10 million.
This is a significant amount for Barcelona, who are suffering from difficulties and whose salaries exceed the maximum. With no convincing alternative, and the huge cost to consider, Laporta made the decision to continue with Xavi, which the board members did not believe.
