Villarreal chief hints at Aston Villa target’s possible departure – “It can always be finalised”

It's been a fantastic second half of the season for Villarreal, led by two players in particular: Alexander Sorloth, who is just one goal behind Artem Dovpik in the Pichichi Trophy race, and Alex Baena, who leads La Liga in assists (13).

In Baena's case, he has been heavily linked with a possible summer departure, with Aston Villa being one of the clubs to have shown an interest in him. Unai Emery wants to reunite with the 22-year-old, although Villarreal have no plans to let him, as president Fernando Roig revealed during an interview with Diario AS.

“Baena is a Villarreal player in the coming years, we are betting heavily on him. I believe that in the coming seasons, he will grow and become a better player. He is a great player. We are not talking about hypotheses or the future – at the moment, we are not in it. The important thing is that he is a player who has developed.” A lot at Villarreal, and my intention is for him to continue to grow here.

“I don't like to talk about hypotheses. Although I always say that there are three parties, and if the three parties agree, it is always possible to close it. But at the moment, this is not a problem that we are working on.”

Baena has a €60m release clause in his contract with Villarreal, although based on Roig's comments, he could be available at a reduced price, as long as it suits all parties. It remains to be seen how the situation develops over the summer.
