Verstappen issues damning Red Bull verdict after Monaco practice

A pessimistic Max Verstappen declared that Red Bull had “no clear direction or solution” to solve Monaco's training woes.

Defending race winner Verstappen and teammate Sergio Perez had a tough day in Monte Carlo, finishing fourth and eighth respectively in FP2 as the RB20 struggled with bumps and curbs.

At one point, Verstappen claimed he was jumping “like a kangaroo” and began to suffer “headaches” as a result of the bounce.

Given that turbulent day, Verstappen revealed that it did not come as a surprise, but the team was still confused.

“I don't think I can even describe what's really happening, it's very difficult,” Verstappen explained.

“It's not something I didn't expect, but it's definitely at the upper end of the worst possible result of the weekend so far.

“It's very difficult, there are a lot of bumps, curbs and camber changes in the track and it's basically impossible to take it every time we overtake it, we lose a lot of lap time because the car doesn't drive it well” and that's definitely holding us back at the moment to go faster.

“There is no clear direction or solution for the weekend to try to resolve something like this.”

How the car was designed

Verstappen put the problems down to how the car itself was designed – and that he does not expect miracles of the kind the team enjoyed last weekend at Imola as it recovered from a turbulent Friday to take pole position and the win through Verstappen.

“Imola was completely different,” he said. “Different problems you can solve with settings – these are the kinds of things you can't solve with settings because that's the way the car is built and designed.”

“You can't change these things overnight, so we're sticking with it – we're trying to make it a little better, but I'm not expecting any miracles.”
