SuperSport WON’T Let Go of WWE despite Netflix’s Jaw-Dropping $5 Billion deal


Multichoice confirmed SuperSport won’t lose WWE amid their billion-dollar Netflix deal.

Regardless of Netflix’s whopping $5 billion deal to acquire the broadcasting rights for WWE shows and specials in various international markets, including the US, Canada, and Latin America, MultiChoice Group has reassured its subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa that they won’t miss out on the action.

In a statement as per TechCentral, MultiChoice confirmed that its subsidiary, SuperSport, will continue to bring World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) events, such as Raw, Smackdown, NXT, Wrestlemania, SummerSlam, and Royal Rumble, to the screens of wrestling enthusiasts in the region.

“WWE events, including Raw, Smackdown, NXT, Wrestlemania, SummerSlam and Royal Rumble, will continue being available on … SuperSport,” MultiChoice reportedly said.

SuperSport has been the local broadcast home for WWE in sub-Saharan Africa since 2017, following a negotiation between MultiChoice and WWE.

This agreement expanded the range of wrestling content available to viewers through the SuperSport platform. 

Prior to 2017, Sub-saharan audiences could catch WWE Raw, Smackdown, and NXT on the free-to-air channel e.tv. 

The continuity of WWE on SuperSport underscores MultiChoice’s commitment to providing diverse and popular content to its subscribers, cementing its position as a leading entertainment provider in the region.

The recent Netflix acquisition of WWE rights in certain international markets reflects a growing trend in the entertainment industry— the shift from traditional broadcasting to streaming platforms. 

Additionally, this shift from cable or satellite TV to streaming platforms is not unique to Netflix.
