‘Sainz sees door close on key 2025 option’

Carlos Sainz has known for some time that he will not race for Ferrari next year, with the team instead opting for a line-up of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

This is despite the Spaniard being the only Scuderia driver to have won a grand prix in the past two seasons, with Leclerc not having won since the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix.

Sainz's options in 2025 included the possibility of moving to Aston Martin to replace Fernando Alonso, taking Hamilton's seat at Mercedes or moving to Stack before Audi arrives in 2026.

Audi is understood to have made Sainz a big-money offer, but while he is considering that, he is also looking at other options – but there is likely to be another door closed, this time at Mercedes.

Toto Wolff is keen to take his time when it comes to choosing Hamilton's replacement, however Sky Sports News He reports that this won't be Sainz – as Wolff is openly flirting with Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

If he fails to secure the world champion title, Wolff will likely turn to Formula 2 rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli to partner George Russell.

Despite potentially losing out on the Aston Martin and Mercedes seats, Sainz is still interested in driving for Red Bull, potentially replacing out-of-contract Sergio Perez, or even Verstappen if he decides to move to Brackley.
