Rosberg issues Mercedes warning ahead of driver line-up decision

Nico Rosberg, the 2016 Formula 1 champion, has warned Mercedes that it would be too early to promote Kimi Antonelli to the Brackley-based team for the 2025 season.

Antonelli is believed to be Mercedes' front-runner in its bid to replace Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton.

The Italian driver has been part of Mercedes' junior program for several years and has impressed with his performances in junior formulas.

However, at just 17 years old, Antonelli is not yet eligible for a super licence but the FIA has received a request to grant him an early licence.

Talking to Sky F1Rosberg, who spent seven years racing for Mercedes, stressed that it was too early to upgrade to the Silver Arrows.

“Antonelli is definitely a future star, but unfortunately it is too early for him, especially in terms of timing, and especially for Toto to be able to make a decision on Antonelli,” he said.

He continued: “He needs to wait until somewhat later in the year where we will see Antonelli’s performance in Formula 2 as well, because he needs a really strong season in Formula 2 to make it possible for him to move directly to Mercedes.”

“Otherwise, spending some time at Williams or a team like that would make sense.”

Is Williams an option?

Speculation has been growing that a switch to Williams could be an option for Antonelli, as he follows a similar path to current Mercedes driver George Russell.

If Antonelli does earn a promotion to Williams, it will likely come at the expense of Logan Sargeant, who has struggled for form since joining the team.

Alex Albon, who has been with the team since 2022, currently has a contract running until the end of 2025.

The Thai-British driver confirmed that he has a strong relationship with Sargeant, but avoided falling into rumours.

“At the moment, this is just speculation, I can only say that it is,” Albon said.

“For my part, I have a very good relationship with Logan of course. We work well together. I help him and he helps me in many ways as well.

“So we have a good relationship with our teammate. But it's just speculation.”
