Real Madrid legend to meet with Florentino Perez today to discuss future – multiple sources

With Real Madrid fans being asked to prepare themselves for a 'painful departure' this summer, Luka Modric's future remains unknown. The 38-year-old has seen his role in the team change this season, but there have been some hints that he could still stay, after his important contributions in the Champions League and start in El Clásico.

According to Telemadrid and Onda Madrid, Modric is set to have an important meeting with president Florentino Pérez on Thursday, which could go a long way in determining his future. Various reports had said that Modric's renewal was unlikely, although the latest news was that the decision would be postponed until after the Champions League final, as is the case with Toni Kroos.

The Croatian is one of the highest paid players in the squad and it would not be surprising if Los Blancos offered him less money next season. While it makes economic sense to lose Modric, there is no one else in the team with a similar skill set, and Carlo Ancelotti's use of him at the end of the season shows that there is still a role for him, albeit a reduced one. Likewise, losing Kroos in the same summer would assume a change in style for Los Blancos, without Modric stepping back if he left, as someone capable of setting the tone.
