Nwankwo, Ikwuemesi Relegated from Serie A as Salernitana Become First Club to Go Down

The Nigerian duo joined stars such as Guillermo Ochoa, Jerome Boateng and Antonio Candreva in helping Salernitana relegate from Serie A.

Salernitana's Serie A fate was sealed after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Frosinone at Benito Sterpi, signaling their relegation to Serie B for next season.

Granata's poor form throughout the 2023-24 Serie A campaign has left them bottom of the table with just 15 points from 34 matches.

Salernitana is relegated from the Italian League

With just four league games remaining, Salernitana's dire situation is compounded by their inability to get past Frosinone, who have temporarily lifted themselves out of the relegation zone to 17th place on 31 points. This mathematical impossibility effectively sealed Salernitana's relegation, making him the first Serie A casualty of the season.

Among the players bearing the brunt of Salernitana's relegation are Nigerian strikers Simi Nwankwo and Chukwubuikem Ekwuemisi. Despite their efforts, including two wins in 34 league games, the pair were unable to keep the club out of the relegation zone.

A turbulent season for Salernitana

Salernitana's journey this season was marred by a state of instability, which was clearly evident in the revolving door of coaches Paulo Souza, Pippo Inzaghi, Fabio Liverani, and current technical director Stefano Colantuono. The club's struggles extended beyond the league, as they managed just two league wins against Lazio and Verona. In addition, their Coppa Italia campaign ended abruptly with a crushing defeat to Juventus in the round of 16.

Salernitana's relegation highlights the intense battle for survival in Serie A this season. With the fate of several teams hanging in the balance, including Genoa, Lecce, Cagliari, Hellas Verona, Empoli, Frosinone, Udinese and Sassuolo, the fight to avoid relegation remains hotly contested.
