MotoGP Germany, FP1: Martin Fastest After Marquez Crash

MotoGP Germany is the final round of the first half of the 2024 season, with the summer break starting on Monday. Jorge Martin currently leads the championship by 10 points over Francesco Bagnaia, and the Spaniard led Friday morning's first free practice by 0.150 seconds.

Jorge Martin topped MotoGP's first free practice at the Sachsenring, 0.150 seconds ahead of Marc Marquez, although neither rider had a smooth performance on Friday morning.

Marquez's session began with an early bike change due to an apparent software error on the bike he started on. On his second bike, Marquez was quickest, although Martin later overtook him before the #93 bike crashed.

It wasn't easy for Martin either, with his Alpinestars airbag deploying under braking at Turn 12 at the bottom of the hill, and then the rear ride height device failing as practice began at the end of the session.

Martin and Marquez were two of three riders to enter the 1:20 race on Friday morning, along with Maverick Vinales. However, only Marquez managed to do so on a used (medium compound) rear tyre, with Vinales opting for a new medium tyre at the end of the run and Martin opting for a new soft compound rear tyre for his final run.

Miguel Oliveira was fourth ahead of the Tech3 Gas Gas duo of Pedro Acosta and Augusto Fernandez, who set identical times of 1m21.151s to finish fifth and sixth respectively. Enea Bastianini was seventh, ahead of Alex Marquez, Dutch MotoGP winner Francesco Bagnaia and Raul Fernandez, who completed the top ten.

Aleix Espargaro entered the Sachsenring injured after a crash in the Dutch Sprint Race last week. The Aprilia rider managed just three laps and a best time of 1:32.902 before deciding to retire at the weekend. Espargaro is usually replaced by Lorenzo Savadori, but the Italian is also injured, having fractured a vertebra in a crash in the Dutch Sprint Race.
