MotoGP Catalunya, Race: Bagnaia Aces Catalunya Rebound

Francesco Bagnaia took victory at the Catalan MotoGP Grand Prix, holding off Jorge Martin.

On the face of it, Bagnaia would lead the first lap and win by about two seconds as boring Grand Prix statistics, but Bagnaia only led briefly at the start before being passed by Jorge Martin.

Martin had passed Pedro Acosta to get onto Bagnaia's rear wheel, and Acosta was only one lap behind Martin in overtaking the Italian.

Martin and Acosta moved away by a second, but Bagnaia maintained the gap there.

Acosta spent several laps trying to pass Martin, but crashed on lap 11 before he had the chance.

Acosta returned to take 14th place, but the battle for the lead was now between Martin and Bagnaia, who immediately began closing in on Martin after Acosta fell.

By lap 18, Bagnaia had come close to Martin's wheel, and the lap after he used his superior right-hand grip to put Martin into turns three and four and make a pass at turn five, he fell from the lead in Saturday's Catalan race. Sprint.

Bagnaia carefully extended his advantage after that tenth over the tenth, eventually winning by 1.740 seconds.

For Martin, second place was far from a disaster. He came to Barcelona leading the championship by 38 points, and left leading it by 39 points.

Marc Márquez's return from 14th on the grid was less strong than on Saturday, but he passed Aleix Espargaro with three laps to take third place, denying Espargaro a podium finish in his final home race.

Espargaro finished fourth, ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, Raul Fernandez, Alex Marquez, Brad Binder, Enea Bastianini and Fabio Quartararo.
