Moto3 Dutch TT, P1: Veijer Fastest as Another Moto3 Milestone Broken

Moto3 action returns this week after a three-week hiatus since the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello. After two consecutive victories since the French Grand Prix, David Alonso leads the riders' standings. Ivan Urtola was quickest in FP1, but Colin Fieger led both sessions, including a new lap record in second place.

Colin Weger was quickest again in the second round of the Moto 3 class in Assen, leading his second session in a row and breaking the Moto 3 session record.

Round 2 was also an important session for Moto3, as Ivan Urtola became the first rider to lap the TT Assen circuit in under 100 seconds with a time of 1:39.790. Urtola was eventually beaten to third by Angel Piqueras and then Veijer, while David Munoz and David Alonso completed the top five. The top seven finished at 1:39, with Ryuusei Yamanaka and Joel Kelso also running under the 1:40 barrier.

Taiyo Furusato, Adrian Fernandez and Luca Ionetta completed the top ten, while Dani Holgado, Stefano Nepa, Scott Ogden and David Almansa took the final automatic qualifying places for the second heat.

Colin Fieger was fastest on Friday afternoon at his home race, the Moto3 Dutch TT. The 95 was nearly 0.3 seconds faster than second-placed Ryusei Yamanaka in a dominant performance from the Dutchman, similar to what has been demonstrated on numerous occasions this year by championship leader David Alonso.

For Alonso himself, Friday in Assen was a struggle, as he finished ninth, more than 0.6 seconds behind Fair. It is certain that Friday was the most difficult for him this season.

Between him and Ver were the aforementioned Yamanaka, the second rider of the MT Helmets MSI team, Ivan Urtola, Adrian Fernandez, Jose Antonio Rueda, Angel Piqueras, Joel Kelso and Luca Luneta, while he came behind Colombian Dani Holgado in the top ten.

Tatsuki Suzuki, Scott Ogden, Jacob Rolston and Stefano Nipa occupied the final four positions in Q2.

Ivan Ortola was the fastest Moto3 rider in free practice at the Dutch TT, finishing just under a tenth of a second ahead of his MT Helmets MSI team-mate Ryusei Yamanaka.

Ortola's time meant David Alonso was unable to finish Moto3 free practice as fastest rider for the first time since the Portuguese Grand Prix more than three months ago.

This time, Alonso was fourth behind the MSI and Leopard Racing Hondas of Adrian Fernandez. Behind Alonso was Jose Antonio Rueda, completing the top five.

Scott Ogden was an encouraging sixth, ahead of Stefano Nepa, Colin Feiger, Joel Kelso and Joel Esteban who completed the top ten.
