Luka Modric to sign Real Madrid extension after Champions League final

Luka Modric will sign a new one-year contract with Real Madrid after the Champions League final.

The picture in Madrid has changed significantly in recent days with Toni Kroos, Modric's long-term midfield partner, confirming his intention to retire.

Both players are out of contract in June, with the club continuing its policy of offering players over the age of 30 a one-year extension, ahead of some key calls.

Kroos initially looked more likely to renew, based on his greater role with the first team this season, but Modric has remained open-minded.

With Kroos now on the move, Modric and Real Madrid are realistic about the chance to retain his experience, and the deal is about to be completed.

According to Relevo reports, the focus is solely on facing Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on June 1, but the contract will be terminated immediately after that.

Modric will then join Croatia's squad ahead of Euro 2024 in the tournament's opening match against Spain on June 15.
