Luka Modric pens heartfelt tribute to Real Madrid teammate Toni Kroos – “There will never be another”

Tributes have poured in over the past few hours after Toni Kroos announced his retirement from football after this summer's European Championship. The 34-year-old will play his final match at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, and his last match for Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Perhaps the most touching tribute to Kroos came from his midfield partner Luka Modric, who delivered a wonderful message to the German maestro on Instagram.

“Tony, it is difficult for me to write these words. The world of football is sad because of the passing of a historic player, and I admit that I am very sad as well. My friend, you are a legend of this sport and a legend of Real Madrid. I really enjoyed playing alongside you. It was an honor to participate with you in Real Madrid midfield You have qualities that make you a unique and special player, there will never be another Toni Kroos Unforgettable European nights, titles, the magic of the Bernabéu – we will never forget this golden era in our club You have achieved it all but you still have one left .Together for 15 years I will miss you my friend.

Kroos' announcement of his retirement means it is increasingly likely that Modric will remain at Real Madrid for at least another 12 months, although there is no doubt he would prefer them to be team-mates.
