Leclerc provides warning over Ferrari upgrades

Charles Leclerc played down the impact of Ferrari's upgrades on the team during this weekend's Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.

Ferrari is introducing an upgrade package at its local round at Imola after making its debut on the day of shooting from Fiorano last week.

The Italian team has started the 2024 season in strong fashion, winning the Australian Grand Prix with Carlos Sainz while also claiming five more podium finishes in the opening six races.

However, Red Bull still has the advantage over the rest of the competition, with Leclerc not expecting the new parts to close the gap immediately.

“We did a filming day but that was mostly for filming purposes,” Leclerc told media including The Daily Mail. Racing News 365. “So, right now, we don't have real data yet.

“I know this is a big change visually, but I would be careful [about] What you see visually so you don't get carried away and don't have false expectations.

“This wouldn't be good for ourselves. It's a step in the right direction, we think.” [but] Still need to confirm.

“I'm confident about it, but we still have to see how much of a step forward it is.”

Leclerc also expressed caution about judging promotions on their performance from Imola.

“I don't think we can judge in one weekend. In a very few laps, we will understand whether the package is working as we expected.

“But then we have to see how it works on other tracks with other characteristics. That is what will really tell us what the rest of the season will look like.

The updates have already been made in Ferrari's simulator, where Leclerc hopes positive results will translate on the track.

“The upgrades are being done in a way that has been anticipated and contemplated for a long time,” he said.

He continued: “So it does not seem that we can respond to the first weaknesses in the car.

“However, it's all about making it a much better car all around. That was the main goal. It was mostly on the simulator where we could see the first data and feel the first few things that were baby steps in the right direction.

“Now we have to see whether we actually find the gains we saw on the simulator, which I hope we do.”
