Kylian Mbappe’s impending move to Real Madrid will have significant financial effect on Ligue 1

Kylian Mbappe announced on Friday that he is leaving Paris Saint-Germain, confirming reports from early February. The 25-year-old has opted not to sign a new contract, and will instead eventually move to Real Madrid, although that deal has yet to be announced at this stage.

The loss of Mbappe is a huge blow to Paris Saint-Germain, as well as to the French League, which has lost its biggest star. For the league, this is the worst possible time to announce this news, as they are set to lose big time financially.

As reported by Diario AS, Ligue 1 does not yet have a buyer for the TV rights for the next four seasons, running from 2024-2028. They have asked for €800m for the national package, a sum that is already unobtainable, but with Mbappé gone, the price they are demanding may drop significantly.

This means that there will be less money in French football, not Real Madrid in particular. They can look forward to welcoming one of the best players in the world this summer, now it remains to be seen when his transfer will be officially announced.
