Hugo Keenan reportedly set to miss Bok series to pursue Olympic dream

Ireland and Leinster full-back Hugo Keenan is set to follow the example of Antoine Dupont and Michael Hooper in switching to rugby sevens at the Olympics in July, according to a report by the42.

Journalist Murray Kinsella reports that Saturday's Investec Champions Cup final against Toulouse will be the 27-year-old's last game in the 15-a-side format for the time being before he commits to Ireland Sevens, who he represented earlier in his career.

The report says Keenan could be available for the HSBC SVNS Grand Final in Madrid at the end of May, as well as the European Rugby Sevens Championship in Croatia in June.

Not only does the move mean that the full-back will not be available for the remainder of the United Rugby League Leinster season, but he will also miss the Irish Test series against world champions South Africa in July, which will be a problem for Andy Farrell.

Ireland finished the SVNS regular series in second place after taking silver in Singapore, taking their bronze medals in Perth, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. The addition of Keenan, arguably the best full-back in the world, could boost their chances of an Olympic gold medal if he returns to sevens well.

Keenan's focus will be solely on Saturday's Champions League final at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in which he is set to start after returning from a thigh injury at the weekend in the loss to Ulster. The clash may not be the last time he faces DuPont in the coming months.

The 39-cap Ireland international was an integral part of the Ireland Sevens squad between 2017 and 2019, playing in the midfield half, and helped the side secure the 'starting berth' in the series in 2019. Since then, Ireland have gained strength To the force, as Keenan did in his career when he was fifteen years old.

The men's Olympic sevens will be held from July 24-27 at the Stade de France.
