How 145kg prop Ben Tameifuna thinks scrum law change will affect him

Bordeaux Beagles and Tonga club, Ben Tamifuna, has had his say on how the latest law changes World Rugby is set to introduce will impact the game.

Three changes have been made to the rules – offside rules from kicks in open play (also known as the DuPont Law), improved options from free kicks, and a ban on the 'crocodile roll' technique – which will come into effect from 1 July. .

Although there will be no change to the crowd mechanics rule itself, the changes will mean that teams cannot choose to crowd from free kicks, thus potentially reducing the number of crowd in a match.

talk on Le French Rugby Podcast Recently, the Tonga captain said this would lead to more “flow and run” rugby. Although this sounds like a positive thing, it could have some ramifications for the 145kg prop.

With fewer mix-ups in the match, Tamifuna believes, and perhaps fears, there may be too much running in training as a result of teams trying to replicate what is to come in matches. He thinks training will go one of two ways for props: “You'll either train to run more or train to be stronger and more efficient around your crowd, because there will be fewer of them.

“It's interesting,” he continued. “I think there will be more flow and running in rugby. I think more teams will try to run the ball more. That will be the case.”

While the idea of streaming rugby will appeal to many, Tamifuna has made a case for excavation, or more specifically robust excavation. He sees the strong huddle as creating a platform for dynamic linebacker play, using some of his Purdue teammates as an example.

“The scrum is really important. It can be an absolute weapon. Just look at teams like South Africa, who are designed to dance. It is a launching pad to unleash some amazing performances. For us, if we have a stable squad, it can groom players like Damian.” [Penaud] And Louis [Bielle-Biarrey].
