He wants good football – Omeruo backs Finidi for Super Eagles job after impressive tactical changes

Former AFCON winner Kenneth Omeruo wants to see Finidi George as the next Super Eagles coach after seeing improvements in style in Morocco.

Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has praised the tactics and training programs implemented by interim manager Finidi George during the recent friendly matches against Ghana and Mali.

Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that Enyimba manager Finidi was named interim manager as the NFF searches for a permanent boss to replace the departed Jose Peseiro.

Kenneth Omeruo, Super Eagles defender, is adamant that the team must step up their game to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Omeruo, who was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, highlighted the team’s improved performance in the second half against Mali, stating that they were not “waiting to be attacked” and could have secured a positive result had they converted their chances.

“The training programs were very good and players were giving 100 percent in training,” Omeruo said in a post on Instagram.

“I think we played very good football [in the] second half (against Mali). We weren’t waiting to be attacked. If we converted our chances, we could have done the job.”

The 30-year-old center-back, who currently plays for Kasimpasa in Turkey, also drew a comparison between Finidi and the recently departed Super Eagles manager, Peseiro.

Speaking further, Omeruo believes that Finidi’s approach is a positive step forward for the national team.

“One difference is he wants us to play good football and I like that. I actually think he knows what he is doing, and he deserves to be given the job,” Omeruo stated.

Peseiro’s tenure as Eagles manager came to an end after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria made it to the final before losing to host nation Ivory Coast. The Portuguese coach had been in charge of the team for 22 months.

Omeruo, who was a substitute in the 2-1 win against Ghana and started the 2-0 loss against Mali, has been a consistent presence in the Super Eagles defense since making his debut in 2013.

His praise for Finidi George’s tactical approach and training methods suggests that the interim manager may have the backing of the players as he aims to secure the job on a permanent basis.

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on the horizon, the Nigerian Football Federation is expected to make a decision soon and it is left to be seen if George is get the nod.
