Formula E axes Misano and adds two races to 2024-25 calendar

Even the Abu Dhabi Auto Racing League

The Formula E Championship will have two new venues and a double race in Monaco for the first time ever, after a 17-race and 11-event calendar for the 2024-25 season was announced today.

As The Race revealed last week, the campaign – the first to feature the new Gen3 Evo car – will return to the staggered years for the first time since the 2019-20 season when it kicks off in São Paulo on December 7, 2024.

This will be followed by a traditional mid-January venue for the ninth Mexico City E-Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and then the first doubleheader of the season at Diriyah Races.

One event to be announced (on March 8) on the calendar is earmarked to be the first Formula E race in Thailand in Chiang Mai, while the first visit to the road course at Homestead is officially scheduled for five weeks after that.

Homestead will replace Portland on the calendar as the US Formula E round will be held in 2025, and CEO Jeff Dodds credited Portland with “opening our eyes” that former or current IndyCar venues might be suitable for Formula E.

“The race in Portland last year was a surprise for us. He had a much better race than we thought,” he said.

Homestead IndyCar

Dodds acknowledged that IndyCar fans are the main target market for Formula E races in the United States, so attracting that audience is crucial to ticket sales for American races.

Although no longer on the calendar, Homestead's oval configuration was a staple of CART/IndyCar in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Dodds also acknowledged the importance of being able to be called the “Miami Grand Prix” of Formula E, which enhanced its marketability above what Portland could offer.

As for additional races in the United States – such as the one at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, which has been talked about – Dodds “is not ruling it out” in the future. He said it was possible there could again be more than one US race on the calendar, as last happened during Formula E's inaugural season in 2014-15, with Miami and Long Beach.

Monaco E Prize, Formula E

One of only three European events to be held on the first weekend of May with the first ever Formula E doubleheader in Monaco.

“There was a lot of talk after the Formula 1 race in Monaco about whether after 95 years this circuit is still suitable as a motor racing circuit. We have passed 200 laps at the Monaco circuit this year,” Dodds said.

“So to have the opportunity to go there and do back-to-back races for the first time ever in the history of motorsport in Monaco is a beautiful moment for us as a championship.”

The three-chord Asian leg begins with the second Tokyo e-Prix on May 17 and 18 before moving to Shanghai on May 31 and June 1 and then ending with a return to Jakarta on June 21, after it was canceled last year. .

Tokyo is also expanding to a double race, while Jakarta is shrinking to a single race.

A return to Europe then concludes the season with a double race at the Berlin E-Prix in mid-July, and then what is likely to be the E-GP final at the London ExCel Arena on July 26-27.

Berlin is believed to have the potential to move to April if problems occur in Chiang Mai or Homestead.

Why did Misano go?

Dodds stressed that calendar continuity was a key consideration in the 2024-25 Formula E calendar, with only Misano not returning from the 2024 schedule.

This is because Formula E is keen to secure a long-term Italian place after the series claimed that the Rome circuit – which served as just that – was no longer suitable for the increasing speed of the cars and Misano's trial this year proved unpopular with teams and drivers.

“They made us feel very welcome there [at Misano]It seemed like a nice event. But the reality of the location, which is so far from the nearest airport, and the style of racing – which not all drivers or teams liked – we didn't feel it would be a permanent, long-term home,” Dodds said of Misano's elimination.

“We think we need to be closer to a big city, ideally on a built or street circuit, rather than a permanent circuit.

“That was our point then [Misano] This calendar will not be our permanent home, so let's offer a different location [in Thailand, which can be long-term] “And to continue searching and make sure we have the right home for Italy in the future.”
