Ferrari warned of ‘personality clash’ between Hamilton and Leclerc

Former Formula 1 star Juan Pablo Montoya has warned of a clash when Lewis Hamilton and partner Charles Leclerc join Ferrari next season.

Hamilton stunned Formula One when it was announced at the start of February that he would leave Mercedes at the end of this season to join the Scuderia as a replacement for the ousted Carlos Sainz.

The decision was astonishing as Hamilton signed a two-year contract extension with Mercedes just last summer and was expected to continue his career with the team.

But the seven-time champion chose to exercise a release clause in that deal, ending a 12-year association with a team that helped him win six of those titles.

The move will put Hamilton alongside Leclerc, whose 2025 season will be his seventh with the team, and who signed a contract extension earlier this year.

Montoya, a seven-time Grand Prix winner in Formula 1, feels there will be problems between the pair when they become teammates.

“It will be interesting to see how smooth things go with Charles and Lewis in the cars, to be honest,” Montoya said speaking to. Racing News 365.

“There will be a clash of personalities there. It will be fun to watch.”

Regarding which team Sainz will drive for next season, Montoya believes the Spaniard would be the best fit for Red Bull, regardless of whether Max Verstappen leaves or not.

Sainz is currently considering a big-money offer from Audi, with the German manufacturer looking for a teammate for Nico Hulkenberg after recently signing the current Haas driver ahead of its entry into Formula 1 in 2026. Hulkenberg will integrate himself into the organization next year with a stake.

But Sainz is biding his time. If given the opportunity, Montoya feels Sainz is best suited to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull.

“I think Carlos now would be the best option in my opinion [at Red Bull]“Especially if there's talk of Max leaving,” Montoya said.

“If they are thinking of leaving Max, they should have an A-plus driver as a replacement. You can't let Chico and Max leave because you won't have anything.

“But at the moment he (Sainz) is doing the job. He is doing what needs to be done. Could there be better drivers? Maybe. But I think in the right situation, Carlos can be really good.”
