EPL: De Bruyne emulates Fabregas after latest assist for Haaland against Tottenham

The Manchester City playmaker set up the Norwegian striker against Tottenham to register his 10th Premier League assist of the 2023-24 season and 112th overall.

Kevin De Bruyne set up Erling Haaland's first two goals in Manchester City's emphatic 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.

Another win was needed to secure a fourth successive Premier League title, as they beat Tottenham to return to the top of the log.

The Norwegian has scored more goals in his first two seasons than anyone else in the history of the competition.

The Belgian playmaker played in the Norwegian in the 51st minute, as Manchester City scored the Premier League away goal against Tottenham since Riyad Mahrez scored at Wembley in October 2018.

Haaland and Stefan Ortega were the heroes on the night, with the striker scoring a brace and Ortega denying Heung-Min Son an equalizer in the final minutes of the game.

But it was not lost on anyone that De Bruyne created another goal for his colleague in the competition, taking him to tenth place in the league despite his absence for several months this season.

A hamstring injury kept De Bruyne out for four months before his return in December, even if the 32-year-old did not play in the Championship until the January win over Newcastle United, stirring things up at St James' Park with a stunning goal. And a great assist for Oscar Pope.

Nine more followed in 2024, lifting De Bruyne to 10th for the season, with only Ollie Watkins (13) ahead of the Belgian, and the 32-year-old also equaled Cesc Fabregas' feat in the Premier League on Tuesday.

What is Fabregas's achievement equaled by De Bruyne?

Fabregas has set up 10 or more goals for six seasons in the competition, a record equaled by De Bruyne after providing an assist for Haaland in just his 17th appearance in 23-24.

The Belgian made 18 goals in the 2016-17 season, 16 goals the following season, 20 goals in 2019-20, 12 goals in 2020-21, 16 goals last season, and 10 goals this season with one game remaining.

On Tuesday, De Bruyne also surpassed Fabregas in the Premier League assists record by one point, although his 112 assists trail only Ryan Giggs' 162.

What comes next for De Bruyne and Man City?

Manchester City will bid for a fourth successive Premier League title on Sunday, as West Ham United visit the Etihad Stadium in Round 38.

De Bruyne could add to his 112 assists against the Hammers, keen to move closer to Giggs' seemingly unassailable total.
