Crusaders apologise to journalist after Penney’s expletive

Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge has apologized on behalf of the organization to 1News reporter Thomas Mead following the offensive remark by coach Rob Penney.

After a tense series of questions about the Crusaders' performance this season and the head coach's tenure with the team, Penny vented to a Crusaders employee while still on the microphone.

“It's a shame that…,” Penny said to Crusaders media manager Jack Fletcher, “Who is he?”

“I'll talk to you later,” Fletcher replied, and Benny replied, “I'll talk to you now.”

In a statement issued by the Crusaders, Mansbridge issued a formal apology to the reporter while providing assurances that Benny had indeed contacted him with sincere regret.

“The Crusaders held a media conference on Wednesday for the purpose of naming our team for the week and discussing the upcoming game against the Blues,” Mansbridge said.

“A series of questioning was conducted from a reporter regarding Rob Penney's future as head coach of the Crusaders.

“After the media conference ended, a colleague's private comment was inadvertently recorded on third party microphones, and Rob has since apologized to me for what was said.

“On behalf of the Crusader organization, I apologize for the statements he made regarding the reporter. I spoke with the reporter today and he accepted our apology.
