Crowe brothers become home heroes with Sidecar TT win

Even the Abu Dhabi Auto Racing League

Manx brothers Ryan and Callum Crowe have joined a rare group of Isle of Man TT home champions by winning the inaugural Sidecar TT of this year's event.

They have followed in the footsteps of their five-time winning father Nick by improving on last year's podium and topping this year's opening race in the absence of the previous dominant force in the category, the Birchall brothers.

The Crowes dominated Saturday's race to win by 27 seconds from last year's runner-up Peter Founds and rider Jevan Walmsley, while Founds' brother Alan and nephew Rhys Gibbons won a close battle for third by just nine seconds. .

The duo made their debut in 2019 before coronavirus led to the suspension of the TT – but they returned again in 2023 with a very strong performance that sent them into this year's race among the favourites, especially after the most successful rider of all time Tom Birchall announced his retirement.

In the end, his brother Ben Birchall (who has won the last 11 sidecar races) and new rider Kevin Russo were forced to withdraw from the race after a crash on Friday night left them fighting to get their gear ready in time.

That paved the way for a popular home win, with Cruz admitting afterwards that the support in the closing laps was something special.

“Our dream was to win the TT, and we just achieved it. What a race, this is huge,” said Ryan Crowe.

His brother added: “The team I have is absolutely amazing, and all the fans there were waving at us. It was unbelievable.”

They will have a chance to defend their title against Birchall later in the week too, with the second of the week's two races scheduled for Wednesday.
