Court date set for man charged with racial harassment of Ugo Monye


A 31-year-old man will appear in court accused of racially abusing former England international Ugo Monye.

Devon and Cornwall Police said Angus Bewkes was summoned to appear at Exeter Magistrates' Court on July 24 to face a charge of causing harassment, alarm or racial distress.

The charge relates to an alleged incident at Sandy Park in Exeter following Gallagher's Premier League victory over Gloucester last November.

At the time, the Chiefs apologized to the former Harlequins player turned pundit and said the incident was recorded on CCTV and passed on to Devon and Cornwall Police.

A force spokeswoman said: “Angus Bewkes, aged 31, has been summoned to appear at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on 24 July 2024 where he will be charged with racially/religiously aggravated harassment/alarming/aggravated distress by words/writing.

“The charge relates to an incident which occurred on Sunday 19 November 2023 in Sandy Park Way, Exeter.

“We must now respect the court proceedings and ask members of the public not to risk damaging those proceedings by speculating on social media.”
