Chelsea star in pole position for Spain Euro 2024 call-up

Spain are now looking for another left-back option to include in their Euro 2024 squad, after it was confirmed on Tuesday that Jose Gaya has suffered a hamstring injury, which will see him miss a second successive major tournament.

Gaya would have been recalled by Luis de la Fuente had he not suffered a setback in his quadriceps, which will eventually require surgery. He and Alejandro Grimando were scheduled to be the selections, but now another player will be drafted instead.

According to Relevo, Chelsea's Marc Cucurella is the favorite to capitalize on Gaya's misfortune. The former Barcelona and Getafe defender was called up for matches against Colombia and Brazil last March when Gaya was also injured.

Girona's Miguel Gutierrez, who has had an impressive season, is also an option for De La Fuente, having been included in the 57-man advance squad revealed last week. At the moment, it is open, but Cucurella is the favorite to receive the call from Spain.
