Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka omitted from MNF Team of the Season, De Bruyne included

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville preferred Manchester City's Phil Foden and Chelsea's Cole Palmer over the Arsenal striker.

Premier League icons Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have revealed their Premier League Team of the Season for the 2023-24 season on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, with Arsenal's Bukayo Saka left out.

The English youngsters have had an excellent season for their clubs, leading to continued comparisons between the trio.

The England international has had a commendable season for Mikel Arteta's side, scoring 16 goals and providing nine assists this season to propel Arsenal's title quest.

Saka's 25 goal contributions are bettered by five players – Ollie Watkins (32), Cole Palmer (31), Erling Haaland (30), Mohamed Salah (28) and Heung-Min Son (26) – with the Arsenal man tied with Manchester City. Phil Foden (25) for his direct contributions.

However, the former Manchester United and Liverpool defenders have overlooked the 22-year-old, whose five goals in the win eclipses all but Palmer and Haaland (both seven).

Jamie Carragher's team in the English Premier League

The most obvious change in Carragher's squad was the retired centre-back's choice of a three-man defense instead of a four-man defence. Carragher opted for a 3-2-4-1 formation, with Everton's Jordan Pickford behind a back three of Saliba, Virgil van Dijk and Gabriel and a midfield partnership of Rice and Rodri up front.

Behind Haaland in the selection of the former Liverpool defender is the quartet of Palmer, Kevin De Bruyne, Odegaard and Foden, with the Belgian playmaker a doubt after making 16 league appearances this season.

An astonished Neville said: “No one likes Kevin De Bruyne more than me, but he played less than a third of the team’s minutes in the league.” “Less than a third!”

Carragher defended his choice of De Bruyne: “And did you see how many chances he created? It basically shows how good the player is. He is the best player in the league for five years.

“He's played half a season, and his numbers are off the scale. He's creating chances at a higher rate than anyone else in the league.”

As for the Player of the Year picks, he chose Arsenal's Neville Odegaard while Foden was Carragher's pick.
