Alex Sanderson aims to make northern ‘powerhouse’ after new Sale deal

Sale Sharks Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

The former Sale player returned as coach in January 2021, guiding them to the Premier League final last season, where they lost to former employers Saracens at Twickenham.

The former back-rower has a strong connection with the club having made 90 appearances for Sale as a player, and believes he can create a 'force in the north'.

Sanderson led Sale to fourth place in the Premier League this season with one round remaining.

However, the Sharks must beat second-placed Saracens on Saturday at the Stone X Stadium if they are to progress to the semi-finals.

“I love it here and there are a lot of reasons why I should stay for at least another three years and build on what we have already achieved,” Sanderson said after signing the deal.

“The group I have come to know and love is the group I want to spend time with. I feel like we are starting to get to know each other better, and when you build that trust, things start to glow on the pitch.

The club's ambitions are in line with my ambitions. I think our ambitions have grown given the taste we had and how close we came to last season.

“It's not enough for us, and collectively, from the owners on down, we are on a path to greatness. I truly believe we can create a powerhouse in the North and a lasting legacy, and that is down to the passion we all share.

“I'm also proud to be a Northerner, and to be able to train and live in this part of the world, where I come from, is a reason to get up in the morning.

“It's an exciting time for everyone at the club and we still have everything to play for this season. We have four weeks to win it all, whereas no one gave us the chance four weeks ago. That leads me on.”
