Albon decision ‘huge of confidence’ in Williams rebuild – Vowles

Alex Albon's decision to sign a new multi-year contract is a “huge vote of confidence” in the Williams project, boss James Fowles believes.

It was announced on Wednesday morning that Albon, who was linked with seats at Red Bull or Mercedes earlier this year, will remain at Williams after signing a new long-term contract, although no specific duration has been announced.

Albon was a key instrument in Williams' rise from the back of the field under Vowles, scoring 27 of his 28 points in 2023 as he finished seventh in the Constructors' Championship, his best performance since the 2017 season.

Fowles has been trying to engineer a major cultural shift at Williams since his appointment, and believes Albon's decision is a major validation.

“He has exceptional talent, artistic input and dedication to the cause,” Fowles explained.

“This is a huge vote of confidence in Williams and the journey back to competitiveness that we are on.

Vowles also added that he felt Albon's decision to stay at the team he joined in 2022 was another piece of the puzzle Williams had to solve as the rebuild continues under the former Mercedes strategy chief.

“We are delighted to secure Alex’s long-term future with Williams Racing,” he said.

“Since joining, Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, and signing him long-term is a big piece of the puzzle of taking us to the top of the grid.”
